The Importance of Personnel Development
Carol Dweck, an American psychologist and professor at Stanford University, states that people can have a growth or a fixed mindset. People with a growth mindset believe that their talents and skills can be developed when you invest in them. People with a fixed mindset are certain that their skills, talents, personality are fixed and stably set – like gifts you either have or do not have. With the idea of having a growth mindset comes the possibility of constant growth. Not in terms of seeking to improve endlessly until reaching perfection in every domain of your life, but in terms of always being able to lift up your gaze further from the horizon, of being able to learn and include new possibilities.
Embracing the possibility of constant, live-long learning by cultivating a growth mindset, enables you to choose to become someone else if you want to, adapting to change in your own way. In our fast moving, ambiguous, constantly changing VUCA-world, this ability to approach daily situations with a growth mindset puts you in the position to adapt to situations while still staying true to yourself, to your believes and be in charge of the situation. How do you do that? Through learning. Constantly, your whole live long.
As Carol Dweck stated in an article published in HBR in 2016, people mostly have part a growth, part a fixed mindset. The ratio of that mixture constantly evolves with experience. That means, that people can and need to be encouraged by circumstances, by other people and their environment, to explore and evolve the boarders of their minds constantly. Consequently, that is where HR and personnel development kicks in – that is why personnel development is so important.
Because it enables employees to develop their full potential. Because it is the starting point of successful work.
Strategic personnel development or: The strategy behind personnel development
Nowadays, many organizations are aware that cultivating a growth mindset and live-long learning is important, but are approaching it from the wrong side, according to Carol Dweck (HBR, 2016). Spreading vision statements does not make the growth mindset real for employees and is simply not enough. What we need are actions. Rewarding employees for important lessons learned even if they do not reach their goals, supporting collaboration rather than competition and committing to the growth of every member, not just in words, but in action, is what is needed according to Dweck. By offering broadly available development and opportunities for people and teams to advance, organizations can continually integrate a growth mindset and a learning culture in their organizational culture.
The Dorsch Dictionary of Psychology defines personnel development as an umbrella term for a broad, hard-to-define spectrum of measures which aims to develop and maintain the individual professional competence of employees (Dorsch, 2020). The instruments of Personnel Development are of a wide diversity and range from communication training to stress reduction to Qi Gong to software-based solutions. At MatchManao, we developed a software-based team development. Our software gives you and your team insights on who you are as a person, how you fit in your team, what you need in your team to be content and perform on a long-term-basis. This social psychological analysis is science-based and constantly improved. We envision a world where the way work is designed is an expression of people´s needs and not the other way around. We aim for healthy organizations and work environments where people´s needs and desires do not need to be adapted based on how their work environment is defined.

Ok. But Why? Goals in Personnel Development
The people within companies support our idea, our vision and our products, because they know as well as we do, that their success depends on the well-being of their employees. As well, these people know the fact, that healthy, well-designed teams will more likely perform better. As the war for talents keeps on roaming, the fact that you as an organization provide a tailor-made-software that acts intelligently based on your team´s specific needs in personnel development is a clear mechanism of attraction.
