The Importance of Personnel Development
Carol Dweck, an American psychologist and professor at Stanford University, states that people can have a growth or a fixed mindset. People with a growth mindset believe that their talents and skills can be developed when you invest in them. People with a fixed mindset are certain that their skills, talents, personality are fixed and stably set – like gifts you either have or do not have. With the idea of having a growth mindset comes the possibility of constant growth. Not in terms of seeking to improve endlessly until reaching perfection in every domain of your life, but in terms of always being able to lift up your gaze further from the horizon, of being able to learn and include new possibilities.
Embracing the possibility of constant, live-long learning by cultivating a growth mindset, enables you to choose to become someone else if you want to, adapting to change in your own way. In our fast moving, ambiguous, constantly changing VUCA-world, this ability to approach daily situations with a growth mindset puts you in the position to adapt to situations while still staying true to yourself, to your believes and be in charge of the situation. As Carol Dweck stated in an article published in HBR in 2016, people mostly have part a growth, part a fixed mindset. The ratio of that mixture constantly evolves with experience. That means, that people can and need to be encouraged by circumstances, by other people and their environment, to explore and evolve the boarders of their minds constantly. Consequently, that is where HR and personnel development kicks in – that is why personnel development is so important.
Because it enables employees to develop their full potential. Because it is the starting point of successful work.
Strategic personnel development or: The strategy behind personnel development
Nowadays, many organizations are aware that cultivating a growth mindset and live-long learning is important, but are approaching it from the wrong side, according to Carol Dweck (HBR, 2016).
